Animal Hide and Seek

Do your kids love hide and seek? Then you have to try this animal version! This was SO easy to set up, and the kids played it over and over again for an hour this morning. Lots of time for me to enjoy my coffee in the morning sun.

All you need are some animals or figures that you can hide outside. I like using these animals because my five year old can practice her reading with a list of words that all have different and distinct starting letter sounds. But if you have a kid who loves trains or cars, you could bring a few of those outside for the game.

For the first few rounds of the game, I hid the animals around our backyard, and the girls worked together to find them. The checklist was helpful when they would say, “I think we found them all!” and I could say, “Are you sure? Let’s count the number of animals on your list and see if that’s the number you have in front of you.” Then my five year old would sound out the words to determine which animal still needed to be found. If you have a printer and enjoy this kind of thing, you could totally make a checklist with pictures too!

After a few rounds of mom hiding the animals, my five year old asked if she could hide the animals. It was really fun to sit with my two year old and keep our eyes closed until the animals were all hidden, then run around the yard together finding them. The hints we got were so creative! “Hint: The elephant is camouflaged!” And then we found him on the gray rocks.

We will definitely be repeating this game many more times this summer - maybe as soon as tomorrow :)

When in doubt, let’s go out.
