Chalk Paint

We are notorious for forgetting to put our chalk away at the end of the day every day. This means that every few weeks, we find small pieces of broken, rained-on chalk in our garden and on our patio. Instead of throwing this away, turn it into chalk paint! All you need are the chalk pieces, something hard to grind them up with (like a rock or the handle of a gardening tool), and a little bit of water.

First, collect all of your small broken chalk pieces. I like to use a muffin tin to separate the chalk by color. You could also use paper bowls if you have those. Then grind up the chalk until you make a dust or paste. The girls like using rocks or the end of our gardening tools to do this. The longer the chalk has been left outside, the easier this will be. Once you have ground the chalk, add a TINY bit of water to make a paste. Really just start with drops - you can always add more water if you need, but it’s hard to go backwards from too much water.

Dip your paintbrushes in and start painting! Just like regular chalk, you can wash off your creations with water when you’re done.

When in doubt, let’s go out.
