Halloween Potions

One of my favorite messy activities to do in October is create Halloween Potions. And I do mean messy - if you want a clean fall activity, try the Flower Pumpkins, this is going to get glittery. I like to think of this as our annual send-off to the water table. One big glittery party before I pack it away for winter. Last October we made these potions by ourselves but this year we invited some friends over as part of a 2-part playdate. First we went to Great Frogs Winery in Annapolis, where there is tons of room for your whole family (dogs included) to enjoy the outdoors, and where your wine tasting comes in tiny glass jars - PERFECT for tiny witches potions.
So as part two of our playdate we invited our friends over to create our spooky potions in the empty jars. There were five kids - 3 five-year-olds and 2 two-year-olds - and I wanted them to have enough room to move and work on their potions so I set up our patio with that in mind. I put 3 small tables next to the water table (two of these were little side-tables from our outdoor furniture sets and one was a kids craft table from inside). Then on the 3 small tables, there were the following materials:
Food coloring (this wasn’t actually out on a table because in my house this is a mom-only material but we used it to make our potion pink:))
Mini glass jars (ours were from the winery but these look to be the same)
Make sure to include pitchers and different sized spoons and ladles from your kitchen!
When our friends first got there, I asked the kids to decide on a color for their potion together - they picked pink so I added the food coloring to the water table. Once that was finished, there rest was up to them! They immediately got to work adding, mixing, stirring and pouring. They were each so excited to show us their mini potions!
I have a wonderful friend who once said to a group, “If you go to Allison’s house, you’re going to end up with glitter on you.” I can’t stop hearing him say that this week - this was definitely one of those messy, glitter-filled days in the sunshine and I am so deeply grateful for it.
